From Libya to Iraq to Syria and now Ukraine. What's the next stop? Sending troops to the Punjab to aid the Sikhs? Maybe to Cuba, to protect Canadian tourists from having fun? How about the USA to get the pipeline built? This is not merely crazy but very dangerous.
Canada was once respected and admired for our peace-keeping missions from Kashmir to the Golan Heights to Cyprus to the Congo; for our foreign aid to Haiti, Ethiopia, Somalia and for working with the United Nations in areas of health, education and agriculture, but no more.
We have given up on peacemaking and instead rushing in to make war; we have significantly reduced our foreign aid and we have moved away from working with the United Nations to working with Canadian corporations to despoil the land, pollute the rivers and increasing poverty, illiteracy and illness amongst the indigenous populations from Bolivia to Peru to wherever our mining companies are operating.
This fall, started with Mulroney, when he dragged us into the OAS and signed the Rio treaty, which committed us to help the USA in its Latin American adventures from Peru to Chile to Nicaragua to El Salvador and Columbia. Chretien tried to return us to the multilateral approach, working with the UN and resisted Bush, by refusing to join up against Iraq. The Afghanistan mission was UN-sanctioned, so he joined in
Under Harper, we have toed he American line, quick to join in its wars and so our troops have been on bombing runs in Libya, Iraq and Syria and we have also sent "advisers and trainers" to Iraq and Syria. Now he is sending troops to Ukraine. What is their mission? What is to be gained militarily? Nothing. The Russians are not going to turn and run. Harper and his defence minister, Kenny tried on two occasions to accuse the Russians of buzzing Canadian planes and even coming close to our ships in the Black sea and twice NATO had to reject those claims and so Harper has decided to up the ante and send troops in harm's way... in the killing fields of Ukraine. Demented.
