Many Republican senators and other public officials rushed to denounce him and withdraw their support and there was widespread outrage and condemnation. Even the destruction caused by hurricane Michael, could not get Trump any reprieve.
Trump came to the town hall debate with two words, " locker room" and "ISIL" and a sniffling nose. He prowled the room, seeming to want to intimidate Clinton, but he failed. He had earlier held a press conference with three women accusers of Bill Clinton, but that did not rattle her either. He time and again tried to interrupt her and even argued with the moderators.
He admitted to not paying federal taxes and he declared that he disagree with his running mate, Pence on Syria. He tried to deflect, by time and again talking about ISIL, whenever he was asked a question and at the end he said that if he were president he would set up a special commission to investigate Clinton and put her in jail ( obviously he is not aware that the US is a democracy with people presumed innocent and that the President do not "put people in jail", the courts do that. This exposed his autocratic mind set)
Clinton was prepared as usual. She continued to list the litany of Trump's intemperate, loutish, racist, sexist statements and she also apologised for her mistakes over her e-mail. She held her own., while once again, Trump showed how unprepared he is and how ill-suited he is, to be president. 341-196.
