Cuba's population is about 11 million and it has had only 2,200 cases and 73 deaths ( that is 0.73 per 100,000 compared to Brazil with 24.48 ( Johns Hopkins U. ). In US, it is 36.80 ( 3.3 million cases and rising); Spain, 60.62 and Italy, 57.35; Iran, 11.91 Sweden with a population of about 10 million has 5,333 deaths, a rate of 5.23 and .Canada has pop. of 37 million , with 107,400 infected and with 8,700 deaths , a rate of about 2.33
What is the reason for Cuba's success?
It acted quickly and decisively
It used its well-staffed universal health care system.
It sent thousands of doctors, nurses, and medical students, nationwide, to conduct daily screenings/ testing.
It closed its borders, and schools, cancelled all flights and used social isolation, treated, traced, transferred the sick to hospitals, treated them with anti-virals and immune system boosters. Those relatives and co-workers who tested negatively were sent home and quarantine for two weeks.
It heeded and followed the Science.
Its first case was on March 1...3 Italian tourists ( one would die)
On March 19, there were 16 cases; March 24 -30, 170 cases and 4 deaths; on April 1, all flights cancelled; April 15, 755 cases and now 2,200 cases and 73 deaths.
Sweden took it easy, placed little or no restrictions;
Brazil led by the incompetent Bolsanaro ( he called it a " little flu" and he has it now), is now facing a withering attack by the virus. Like wise Texas and Arizona, following Trump and now the people are paying the price. .
in the U S, there was confusion and little direction or co-ordination. Some States like N Y and California acted quickly and was able to bring the infection down ( since then California, (especially the Los Aneles area) is seeing another surge.
Florida, Arizona and Texas are infected massively, because they refused to follow the Science, they did call for mask, did not practice social distancing and their beaches and bars were allowed to open. These Republicans followed Trump in playing down the virus and its effects. Now the people are paying for their foolhardiness.
Cuba, despite the 60 yrs of sanctions/embargo is a lesson well worth learning.
Act decisively, give clear and consistent direction, heed the science; coordinate and use resources competently and. Its universal health system with wits thousands of doctors, nurses and medical students, knew what to do and did it.
